This tutorial is a broad overview of layer uses, including how to add multiple images to a project, arrange them in the layer stack, and change the layer opacity. Part 1 includes how to import you picture in to gimp and how to separate the clean line art from the white background and put it on it's own separate transparent layer. This video has information on layers, as well as the color selection tool.
