I am aware of the overlay function, but because the layer is solid, it would not make the bump mapping any darker.

I would have just used solid layers and then set them to overlay. Then duplicated the layer a few times. As the name might suggest it makes it look like it is laying on top.

Basically, use the paths tool to extend the P under the rest of the word, then converting it to a selection, then filling it with black.
